Hiring a domestic helper in Singapore

The hiring process in five steps

  • Write a short brief: duties, household size, languages and start date.
  • Shortlist profiles on MaidAgencies.sg and compare skills ratings and experience.
  • Ask the representing agency for an interview and a written cost breakdown.
  • The agency applies for the Work Permit; you buy insurance and, for most nationalities, a security bond.
  • Your helper completes a medical examination and starts work; plan a clear first-week routine.

Using MaidAgencies.sg

Every profile on MaidAgencies.sg is managed by a licensed Singapore employment agency. Profiles are refreshed daily, and the agency remains responsible for the accuracy of each listing.

Signing in as an employer is free and unlocks clear photos, employment history, food handling answers and the agency biodata where available.

More questions about hiring

What does a typical hiring timeline look like?

For a transfer helper already in Singapore, placement can take one to three weeks. A new helper from overseas usually takes four to eight weeks because of the Work Permit application, travel, the medical examination and the Settling-In Programme for first-time helpers.

What costs should I budget for?

Plan for the agency fee, the helper’s monthly salary, the monthly Foreign Domestic Worker levy, mandatory medical and personal accident insurance, the security bond for non-Malaysian helpers, and her food, lodging and rest-day arrangements. Always ask the agency for a written breakdown.

How many rest days must a helper get?

Helpers are entitled to a weekly rest day, and at least one rest day a month cannot be compensated with extra pay. Agree on the rest-day arrangement in writing before the helper starts, and check the Ministry of Manpower website for current rules.

Do I need to attend a course before hiring?

First-time employers must complete the Employers’ Orientation Programme before applying for a Work Permit. Your agency can tell you whether it applies to you.

What if the helper is not a good fit?

Ask each agency about its replacement policy before you sign: how many replacements are included, the time limit, and which fees are refundable.
